Luana Alonso, a 20-year-old Paraguayan swimmer, ended her time at the Paris Olympics by being eliminated in the 100-meter butterfly heats. A disappointing result in what was her second Olympic participation, after her debut in Tokyo at 17 years old.
Through a message on his social networks, Alonso announced a turning point in his sporting career, but not before thanking “the thousands of joys, unique opportunities and friends from other countries that I will always carry in my heart.”
Nothing out of the ordinary, if it weren’t for what happened in the last few hours. The Paraguayan Olympic Committee (COP) urged the swimmer to leave the Olympic Village for creating “an inappropriate environment within Team Paraguay.” COP’s Head of Mission, Larissa Schaerer, issued a statement in which she requested that “the swimmer leave the Athletes’ Village immediately.”
In the same statement, Schaerer confirmed that it was Alonso herself who asked to leave the facilities “since it was of her own free will that she did not spend the night in the Villa.” After her participation in Paris, the young woman took the opportunity to do some sightseeing in the French capital, posting about it on her social networks. Something that the COP wanted to nip in the bud in order to maintain the right atmosphere in Team Paraguay.
