Aligarh Muslim University has awarded the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman, D.Lit., for his services and global contribution. Permission has been sought from the Central Government for conferring the degree.
According to the news of the Indian Express , for the first time a proposal in this regard was sent by the university to the Ministry of External Affairs in September last year.
After this, the Ministry of External Affairs had sought a list of foreign names from the university, to whom the university has given honorary degrees so far.
The list of those names was handed over to the ministry by the university in October 2021 itself. After this, AMU had once again reiterated the demand for permission regarding its proposal in the month of January.
According to officials, a proposal to confer an honorary title to Mohammed bin Salman is currently under consideration.
In a proposal sent to the Centre, the AMU said, “We propose to confer on the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman the title of Honorary D.Litt for his services.”
Emphasizing on the relations between India and Saudi Arabia, the resolution said, “Saudi Arabia’s relations with India are already friendly and this honorary title will further strengthen that relationship.”
